Choose a safe garden, park or outdoor space. Check the weather, agree clear boundaries and make sure clothing and activities are suitable for the child and location.

Explorer kit checklist

  • A small backpack
  • A drink of water
  • Weather-appropriate clothing
  • A pencil or crayon
  • This printed guide
  • A responsible adult

THE THREE EXPLORER RULES

  1. Stay inside the agreed boundary.
  2. Look carefully, but leave plants and wildlife where they are.
  3. Stop and tell an adult if anything feels unsafe.

THE CHALLENGE

Complete as many missions as you can

Find three different leaf shapes.

Spot something that could provide natural shelter to a small animal.

Find a natural object that points in a direction, then check with a compass.

Listen quietly for one minute and record every sound you hear.

Find five different colours in nature.

Identify one safe place to shelter from rain.

Draw a simple map showing your start point and two landmarks.

Explain one way to leave the area cleaner than you found it.
