Guts For Garters

In a real survival situation it’s important to use every bit of a kill and it can certainly be put to good use to complement your kit.
No, I’ve never made actual garters from guts, although I’ve crafted some pretty fabulous fashion garments out of my dinner over the years.

Now, just to be clear, I don’t mean in a Lady Gaga meat dress kind of way, I mean generally just being resourceful and using all parts of the animal to help you.

Hide is obviously great for warmth and bones are good for tools. There’s some food for thought to get started. If you’re particularly strong stomached, why not try intestine cordage (my personal favourite.)

And back to Lady Gaga, if you’re a vegetarian, it is possible to survive in the wild on a plant based diet alone. Arguably, this requires even deeper skills than hunting does.

Poisonous plants are a real danger, so as a rule of thumb, if it tastes poisonous, it probably is, so spit it out. Grab a foraging book and keep it close.

Stay sharp, stay safe.
